LAKE

BILLY CHINOOK

Lake Billy Chinook is a vast, awe-inspiring reservoir in the heart of Central Oregon, spanning approximately 4,000 acres and plunging to depths over 400 feet. Fed by the renowned Deschutes, Metolius, and Crooked Rivers, the lake’s deep canyon arms extend like a crow’s foot across the high desert landscape. Around every bend, you’ll find breathtaking views of towering palisade cliffs, creating a dramatic backdrop for an unforgettable day on the water.

The Fish

Lake Billy Chinook is home to a diverse range of species, including Bull Trout, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Kokanee, and Smallmouth Bass. However, it’s the prized Bull Trout (Salvelinus confluentus) that draws anglers from far and wide. While this species is considered threatened across much of its northwestern range, it thrives here thanks to the cold, pristine waters of the Metolius River. These apex predators are aggressive and hard-fighting, making them an exciting challenge on the fly. We primarily target them using streamer patterns that imitate juvenile fish and Kokanee, though other methods can also be effective. Bulls typically range from 2 to 8 pounds, with double-digit giants not uncommon—a true trophy for any angler.

The Season

The season for targeting Bull Trout on Lake Billy Chinook can begin as early as February, depending on weather conditions and water temperatures. The prime window is from early March through mid-April, when warming waters draw these large predators into the shallows to hunt baitfish. During this time, anglers have the best chance to connect with trophy-sized Bulls as they aggressively feed, making for some of the most exciting fishing of the year.
